New Plymouth
« on: January 29, 2012, 06:07:00 PM »
Hi! Thanks so much for all the information...It has helped so much! My husband, an engineer and I (high school teacher) will be relocating in August this year with our two daughters (2 & 4). It has taken four years and we are so excited about this move. We have family in Wellington which is where we will start but I have always heard amazing things about New Plymouth. Does anyone have any advice?

We lived in Auckland for 3 years and is now living in NP for just over a year.  LOVING IT..... Do not miss Auckland one little bit.  Can also honestly say that our weather this year has been better than what everyone has "warned" me about, even better than what we experienced in Auckland.  In my honest opinion - I think you can be happy anywhere.  It is what YOU make of it.  How you deal with things.

Good luck

You may just fall in love with Wellington and not want to leave :)

I know a few people that have lived/worked in NP, and all seem to be very happy with life there.  One lady who now lives here in Hamilton, lived there for a number of years, and was showing me in a book we have, where she lived.  She said, "look there's my mountain!".  I said, "YOUR mountain?", and she answered, "Oh yes, every day to and from work, I would see that mountain.  It's mine!!"  ;D  And it seems all NP people feel like that about that dear ol' mountain.  I myself have only spent one night there, on a farmstay, and we had yucky weather, but we did get to see the mountain as we entered the area from the Palmerston North direction.  I hope we can visit there again.

Hehe...Chan, it is so funny that you say that because my husband has said a few times that Wellington has a particular charm about it and is a bit 'bigger' which is what I am used to in Joburg? I am actually contemplating testing the waters at Wellington a little before making a final decision...because as you say, we may fall in love ")

The mountain there is incredible, I can imagine that people fall in love with it ") I was brought up in Northcliff, Johannesburg and even though it is a 'hill' I look at, It is a part of my birthplace.

Having said that, we are both so excited for our impending move to Wellington, and it probably will be our home very soon. Counting the months (7 left)!

Thanks so much for all your help and advice...can't wait xxx

The "hill" in Northcliff was MY hill too when growing up.
Spent 35 years of my life "under" that "hill"

Hope I don't offend anyone, but if i had to choose between NP & Wellington .. Wellington wins hands down !  Its a city, but it doesn't have that 'rat-race' feel.  Personally, I like to be where the action is, I like that people don't have to pay $$$$ for a small carrier aircraft to get them to where I live ... Wellington is an international destination (handy for when the family visits from SA)  Yes, it's true, be careful, or you might just fall in love with Wellington ...  :smitten:
