Hi, I have been searching for property in Wellington and could not help noticing that many of these places have alarm systems as part of the spec.

Is this the norm for some of the houses? Or am I just looking in the bad areas?

I am looking in a price range of between $300 - $450 per week.

Also what is the general trend with regards to ovens? Do most of the places have build in ovens like here in SA?

Saying you have an alarm here, is being cool

and like Nolan said, a selling point

There does seem to be more alarms in houses in the "bad" area's

, but a lot of the wealthier homes have them too

The best advice I can give you is, speak to the locals of the area you want to live in, they will very quickly tell you where to avoid living

It will be nice when one of you guys get to Wellington, so that we can have a local spy there too!

I'm getting to know Chch really well now, but nobody want to live here

My take is: if you have an alarm system, you must have something valuable to steal, so therefore you're more likely to be burgled.... unless you're in SA of course...

When we'd been in this house for less than a year, some telemarketer phoned to ask if we were interested in an alarm system. I told the person, "I just moved away from South Africa so that I don't NEED an alarm system!"

You're right Colleen, only if you have something valuable, then get an alarm.

My daughter has a trampoline outside and often she leaves stuff out there, it's always there in the morning. Here you see the kids often leave bicycles outside and braai etc.
I always laugh when I see the kids leave their bikes on the driveways and say, geez those would be long gone if this was SA

I forget to lock my car sometimes and we've even frogotten to lock the back door once or twice. Not a good thing, but that would be commiting suicide in SA $:-\$

I think you would be quite surprised if you spoke with people who do have alarm systems in NZ. The thing is, they dont actually activate the thing....

...can you imagine.

Last year during our visit to NZ, we stayed with my cousin. They NEVER activated the alarm in their house. Didn't even lock the backdoor when they left or went to sleep.

People I know are scared to visit SA now because they have become so "reckless" with safety, and it doesnt take much to encourage criminals here....they would just be sitting ducks
