Registration for University Lecturer
« on: September 28, 2012, 12:08:01 pm »
HI all

I am a university lecturer having level 9 qualification and over 8 years of UG/ PG level lecturing experience. The  university lecturer job is in the LTSSL and am planning to submit an EOI ,was just wondering if NZ registration is required for university lecturer job and if yes , should the applicant get it before submitting EOI

Looking forward to your advice

Dear Mylaiprem,

We recently received our residency under the Skilled migrant category for Lecturer.  I did not have to register with any bodies, had to have my qualifications assessed though.  I had to give a detailed letter from my employer stating exaclty what I lectured, how many hours a week, what research I did and how involved I was with designing the course I lectured in.

Good luck

Please advice. Thanks

Sorry for the late reply, hectickly busy arranging flights etc.  We are moving to Napier, EIT is there.  I registered on their site and get updates on vacancies regularly.  It seems like (very much in SA) you need to get a foot in the door.  I am looking out for tutor jobs too. In the meantime I can register as a teacher and do relief teaching.  Lots of universities to check out.

6.5 I think is fine.  I replied on the othe post too.

Good luck and hang in there!

Hi Mylaiprem and OppiesNZ!

I was just wondering what your opinions are on the success rate of finding a lecturing job in NZ?

I tend to agree with OppiesNZ about "getting a foot in the door" as lecturing vacancies in your specific field may not be as forthcoming as other fields may be...I mean its a very broad category and that just worries me a teensy bit

Oh and another thing, how did you register as a teacher OppiesNZ? Or do your qualifications include that as well?

Thanks

Hallo Dreamer,

I honestly do not see many Lecturer jobs, or they are so specific like it seems the add was written with someone in mind - just my opinion.  So my plan is to relief-teach in the meantime.  You do not need to register as a teacher for lecturing, only if you want to teach in a school.  So for our residency application it was not necesary, but will do it once we arrive in NZ.

This link might help.  You need your qualifications assessed by NZQA for your Skilled Migrant application, so for the teacher registration you should already have that done.

Hi hi again

Yes I tend to agree, from what I have seen on the internet etc...Have registered for alerts at all the Universities but some fields of lecturing seem to have more posts vacant than others will have (but this is the same all over, not only in NZ). Also the point about already having someone in mind, true all over too! My fear is that lecturers may be on the LTSSL, but that does not mean that sport science and sports physiology lecturers necessarily are! However..looking on the bright side :) sport and the development thereof is in much greater demand than here in SA! Looking at SportNZ and all their lovely vacancies (just browsing for future reference...ie citizenship) is amazing compared to the types of careers I would have access to in SA. Bright prospect Nr 2 (having had a year in NZ already in the past) is that it is really possible to make a name for yourself and make a difference in NZ! I mean 4 mil compared to 56mil and BEE is fab!!

Not sure I can register as a teacher, as I have no formal teaching qualifications, just went on to lecture after I finished my Masters, whilst I am now completing my PhD. But will check it out, thanks sooooo much! Very keen for a post-doc fellow or a tutor position though!

Stay strong and keep on!
xx

Nope still jealous, would gladly settle for being a pleb there! Hehe! Yes I have been to palmy a few years ago...lovely place and agree with your description! Have not been on campus, but that sounds like a fab working environment!

Have registered on Massey's site for job alerts, so hopefully I get lucky too! Never say never!

Hello again!

An update to you all who have been so supportive:

I'm off to Aus on an amazing opportunity at a varsity there...just goes to show that it can happen from this side! Sad to not be coming to NZ, but I'll be "just over the ditch".

Hope its all going well there!

Dreamer!
