Hi Andrea and welcome!

Um... Not sure really on the OZ PR. If it works anything like here, then I'd think you'd have to at least land in OZ (on the way to NZ), get the return visa stamped into your passport, and then fly on to NZ. When we landed here in NZ with our PR, we automatically had a return visa stamped into our passport.
Don't know if that helps any? You may want to check out SA-Australia, as they may have more answers for you?
BTW, congrats on the baby... and who knows... maybe you guys land up here in NZ in the end... it's a beautiful country!
