Its happening...!
« on: September 17, 2013, 09:11:23 am »
While we got a visas a few months ago already, we had some substantial fixing-up to do on our house, and had to get it sold before we could book flights, etc.

Well, we accepted on offer on our house on the day that it was listed, and their bond was approved 7 days later! Selling our house was such a huge worry for us - we were thinking that it might take months, and actually its taken a day.

So now its full speed ahead. We move out on 9 November and stay with my wife's folks until we fly on 29 December. The container will leave immediately on 9 November.

Its all suddenly very real and rather overwhelming. Gulp.

I think that's when it's going to feel real for us too. The day we move out of the house.

December is just around the corner too. Time is just going to fly by!

Good luck.

mbl77 congrats with the house and things moving ahead!

its very overwhelming hey! Selling our house was the hardest part for me. it was our first :) so every night i sit there and look at it and tell it how much i will miss it LOL

Would your container not be there before you are, they say it takes 6 weeks?

Good luck with all the final arrangements and enjoy the last month and bit in your house!

Thanks. They're telling us 8 weeks, so it'll be there a few days after we arrive. Lots of pressure to find a place ASAP when we get there. And its the middle of holidays, so I'm not sure how easy house-hunting is going to be?

Ok, who are you using if i may ask. We cant get any quotes done now as i may not take leave in my last month so will have to wait till early October to get quotes and decide on which company.

And the container may take a few days extra because of the holiday season!

Congrats, it will be one of the most exciting and emotional times in your life - such a huge adventure ahead of you.  I still have to pinch myself sometimes!

   Congratulations.    Double check when your container arrives, as it is costly for it to sit there while it waits for you.  You pay per day.  I am not sure where you will be house hunting, but holidays is the worst time in our area.

Sorry, missed your question some how. We got quotes from Crown, Advanced Transport and Biddulphs. Crown was the most impressive, but also most expensive (by R10k). We decided on Biddulphs.

Our container will almost certainly be there before we have a house to move our stuff into. Its going to cost us a $450 handling fee, plus $68 per week storage. The alternative was to store it on this side for a couple of weeks, which would be cheaper, but then they don't pack it directly into the container, and I worry that stuff might go missing between leaving our house and loading on the ship.

Eish good luck hey! This container is stressing me out now. Dont want to send it too soon, also dont want to wait too long and sit there for months without furniture.

Crown coming to see us tomorrow!

Today I got a quote from 2 companies, one was R70k I almost made a poopie in me pantie  :2funny:

The other one from biddulphs was R55k much better. On the quote there are quote a few things "not included in the price" which makes me wonder how much are we going to pay in when the container arrives there

Goldie, I asked the Biddulphs guy what the other costs would be, since their paperwork had a mile long list. He explained that the only definite one was a clearance fee which I think was around R6k (don't quote me on that, and it obviously depends on the exchange rate at the time). Then if for some reason MPI (previously MAF) get sticky on something in the container, then there could be extra costs for cleaning, etc.

Those costs would be the same for all movers though, since its not the movers that are charging the fees.

6K for a clearance fee ?  Are the papers made from silk and do they use solid gold pens ?  I did my own clearance in NZ, and it was very easy once I had been told exactly which papers to fill in, who to take it to.  It was as simple as that.

Today I saw 3 people and now im DONE. Really dont want to show anyone through my house ever again...

Last person i saw was Brenda from Bayley and wow she knows what she is talking about. Really can see she knows her story and i was most impress with her and got the best feeling about their company. Gonna get all the quotes on Monday.

There was also only ONE of all these companies that is willing to let us pay before the container arrives in NZ which takes a lot of stress off of us !
