Bringing your car over from SA to NZ
« on: February 10, 2016, 12:21:12 pm »
Hi all

Looking at car prices in NZ, it seems it might be way more beneficial to me to simply pay my car off (roughly R70k) and then bring it over with us to NZ. It's a fairly nice car too, VW Golf 6 GTI with less than 70,000km. Buying that same car in NZ would easily cost about >$17k which makes the idea of spending the extra money for shipping and settlement worth it.

Has anyone here brought their car from SA over with them?

Two things that I can think of to keep in mind. One, what is shipment going to cost you? Add this to the cost of your vehicle and ask yourself if the overall total will justify it. Secondly, how available will spare parts be for your vehicle and at what cost?

I've heard that it should be possible to get a fairly good second hand car?  I haven't looked into the details, but was thinking we'll probably sell our car in SA and see if we can find such a deal.

I run a small side business as an RMVT. My suggestion would be for you to sell your Mk6 and buy one in NZ. Otherwise, at best, you tend to lose the money for shipping. GTI's are available as NZ New or as Japanese imports. The Jap imports are very well priced too.

Being a VW fan myself, I must warn you that the cost of maintaining European cars in NZ is a lot more than Japanese brands, and for no logical reasons.
The car would need entry compliance in NZ, which I am sure your car will pass. The cost of that, and 6 months registration (with new plates) is approximately $800. So factor that in to your decision.
DIY Residence Application - Roughly 18 months

Relocated to Auckland - 24th May 2015

Thanks All

Yeah I've done the math and removed my heart from my car (ouch). It's not worth it to take the car over. When talking about it monetary terms, it WOULD be a smart choice since buying another MK6 GTI over in NZ would be DOUBLE the cost of taking mine over. But like you all mentioned, Euro cars in NZ is basically stupid. Maintenance and parts are shockingly priced.

We've decided to let the car go and focus on buying a house when we are there. Cheap cars for the Win! Maybe a cheap'ish SUV of some sort would be way better for our new lifestyle in NZ anyways.
