I paid R139,00 to do the Lemon check on my car (By SA credit card)
Ellerslie car fare is usually on Sunday so you can tell the seller that you need to go to the bank on Monday to draw the money. On Sunday night you can check the history of the vehicle online and buy with a better frame of mind on Monday.
Cars are registered in your name very easily (too easily) here and a car can be transferred into your name by someone that is not even the owner of the vehicle (they just fill in a form to say they sold the car too you)
Ownership does not get verified.

We just bought two cars yesterday....

Jan went looking with Joshua in the morning.  Then took me to go see the car he liked.  On the way we stopped at a different dealer and saw them parking a newly arrived VW Golf.  We decided we liked it - new arrival in country, not new from factory.  We payed the holding fee, as they have to still register it here, and do a few tune ups.  Then we went across the road to the other place, and liked the Holden Astra, and bought that too.  Two German cars within half an hour, both red exterior hatchbacks with black interiors!   :D  We talked the Holden guys down nealry $1000.  The VW was brought down over $2000 for the sale.  The Astra has a current WOF.  The VW will also have once they're done with it.  Was so easy, they just made photocopies of our TX drivers' license, and we wrote them a cheq to hold it for us.  We pay the rest when we take delivery.  We get the Astra tomorrow afternoon, as there were one or two things we wanted them to fix first.
lekker sweet as, y'all

Hi Colleen .

Congrats on the cars. I know the feeling!! I wish you many safe km's.

Just a tip. Apparently when you buy from a dealer, they have ensure there is still at least 3 months Registration period on the vehicle left. A lot of the guys exploit foreigners and don't adhere to the rule. We were caught when we bought the RAV. So just check when you go to pick up the cars.
