Title: Visiting SA - Money
Post by: mandyh on August 03, 2010, 10:41:53 pm
Some advice from everyone please.

If we were to go back to SA on holiday for two months what would be the best way to take our money over there and be able to access it easily in SA?

Carrying cash is just way to risky in SA - credit card - travellers cheques -anyone got any other suggestions?

When we went we used a Visa Debit card and we still had some money in DHs' Cheque account which we had to close so that was good.

SAKB - you would not find me in SA for anything under this sun. You could even pay me and I wouldn't be there!!!

I was asking for my little big child :-).  Kyle is going over early next year to go to a family wedding and to see his dad.

Hi Mandy
When I went to the UK last year I got a cash passport from Travelex.  You preload these cards with with pounds or Rands so you can choose your day and your exchange rate.  It has a pin and you can draw money from and ATM machine. You can also view your balances online.  I still have pounds on mine which I will transfer to a new cash passport in rands for when I go to SA in December. If I remember correctly I think you can transfer money into the card too if you need to top it up.  You also get two cards so if one goes missing you have the second card and you can cancel it if necessary.  It is not an eftpos card so you have to withdraw cash from the card at the ATM.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Kerry

Thanks Kerry - I will pass this onto him.

SAKB - we've very happy here in NZ and have absolutely no need to waste money going back to SA for any reason.

We used a travel cash passport when we went to the US, but you only get them in certain currencies. I know you get British pounds, US $ and Euro (I think) but I don't think you get rand ones. You definitely don't get NZ$ ones. If you do get Rand ones, they work brilliantly.

You can get the travelex cash passport in Rands. There aren't alot of currencies available, but Rands is one of them.
