Post by: Johan01 on May 06, 2007, 10:48:48 am
Johan and Jolene with two boys Chase 6 and Pieter 8 from Pretoria. Occupations accountants. Jolene is actually the one with all the skills but not on the skills shortage list, You see NZIA doesn't always have evrything right. Amongst her skills Mother, Wife, Companion Teacher, Chef, Interior Decorator, Buyer, Nurse, Project Manager, Driver, Events Co-ordinator, Kids Story Teller. The last one she's very good at and we are thinking of getting all down and publish short stories on CD or Internet. So Nolan once we are settled I will speak to you for assistance.

Cool thread Johan.

Nolan, Mel and Candice (6), currently in Gauteng. We have two small businesses which we intend to continue with in NZ (when we finally get there  ??? - I have wanted to leave since 2001, but for various reasons coudn't).  The one business is a web design company, then I also teach folks to paint (so if you are headed Auckland direction, you can sign up now already  ;)  ;D )

Currently our ETA is early March 2008.

PS - Johan, I would LOVE to get involved, especially if they are Afrikaans stories  O0

Colleen and Jan, Joshua (8 ) and Heidi (6).
I am a CHEO (Chief Home Executive Officer) and Jan is an Analyst Programmer (IT).
We left SA in 1998 and came to America (Texas).  Bought a house after 8 months, and been in it since.
Due to our immigration not working out in the USA, we are now heading to NZ, where I have 2 sisters and a Dad already there.
We are not sure yet where we will settle, but probably in the North Shore area, or there abouts, or the other option is somewhere round the Lake Taupo, or Hamilton areas....
We have to be out of the States by September 2007.

Will apply for PR once we are in NZ. Going to South Auckland. Still fretting about lots of things but I am sure they will iron themselves out in good time. My 4 year old is excited too....but he doesnt understand seperation yet, so he has some big lessons coming his way...poor chap.

Yeah, Candice also doesn't quite get the concept of overseas yet, despite us showing her on maps and Google Earth, etc. She still asks stuff like is NZ close to Brakpan, how long is the drive to NZ  :2funny:  :'(

We took her to the airshow at Rand Airport yesterday so that she can she what the inside of a Boeing looks like, we also take her JHB Airport every now and again to get her used to the idea of having to fly far, far, far away to get to NZ.

And if she is anything like my daughter, she will ask if she can visit a friend or family member and won't understand why you can't just drive there, then she sobs and says she misses them.......and your heart breaks :'(
On a more positive side, kids do make friends very quickly and settle in a lot faster then we do O0

Hi
We are Anchen, Herman and Amelie(turning 3 in June) from Pretoria.  After our LSD to Austalia in March and finding it too difficult to just go there on temp. visas, we desided to go to New Zealand instead. We are now quite excited about the big move although Amelie still thinks she's going to "Austraaaaliaaaa"  :D

She didn't go with us on the LSD so everytime we show her the video she says "Amelie ook daar gaan" She's got the t-shirts for OZ and her "Oom" Braam is there so we decided to leave it for now.

We're leaving on the 3rd of September. Just packing things up and leaving, but we're faithfull that we will get jobs. There is just no other way to do it (for us). I've applied for jobs there but they all want me to be there for inteviews.  I'm an Analyst programmer and Herman an electrician. We're planning to go to Auckland because of better prospects jobwise and the fact that I've got a friend there. :)

Isn't that right?!   In that case I really do hope we land up living close to some of you guys.  my kids have never had other kids their age in our immediate neighbourhood, and it really makes it hard some days not to be able to say, "go play with so-n-so"...  :-\

Hi

We are Toni, Malcolm, Brandon (13) and Tammy (5).  Malcolm is a Diesel Electric Fitter and on the skilled shortages list.  I am in Bookkeeping and Admin - altho I am hoping to do something completely different over there.  I have a passion for teaching people and helping people on the MS Office programs and using their PC's in general, so am hoping to get myself Microsoft Certified, so that I can pursue my dream job.  Malcolm is hoping to do something different too.   ;)

We got PR and famous blue stickers in Nov. 2006, house is sold and we leave the sunny shores of Cape Town on 20.06.07.  Have no idea where we will end up, altho Hamilton does look pretty nice.  I have a sister in Wellington and an old school friend in Auckland.
And due to this site and another similar, I guess I have 'contacts' all over New Zealand.  :D

:gl: to all and hopefully we will all meet soon on the other side of the planet.  :heeha:

Tony, Bernice, Rayne (8) and Kurt (5) - we moved down from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in 2005.  Tony was in the SAPS, left in 2006 as he couldn't handle it anymore, I work in IT, System's Anaylist.  Tony has wanted to immigrate since 2002 to England but I have always put the breaks on for family reasons, anyway, we are so sick of the crime in this country and obviously we want the best for our kids, so we have decided to immigrate to NZ.

First off, we're Marilize (clinical psychologist and soon to be with the Dept of Corrections), Jacques (secondary school teacher) and Joshua (playstation guru extraordinaire and almost 5).

Secondly, I am very perturbed at the disturbing slant of this thread.  What's with the North Shore?  Sure there are lots of Saffers there but quite frankly we're insinuating ourselves in every town here  ;D

There are quite a few of us in Palmy but really, we need to get the numbers up.  If they play nz-sa rugby matches here (which they do quite often) we need to at least have even representation.  So for the sake of your country, MOVE TO PALMERSTON NORTH!!!  You have a good varsity on your doorstep, low crime, affordable housing, child-friendly facilities and some excellent primary schools.  And the sun is overrated anyway  ;)

Hi everyone.

I think it is about time that I introduce myself.

My name is Eileen, hubby Nico and two boys, Chris (6) and Jonathan (4).

We have decided some time ago that SA is no longer the place for us. I cannot handle this crime and corruption any more. We decided on NZ by means of elimination.

We went to NZ last year during July/August to make sure if we are doing the right thing.

I'm sure that most people will agree that NZ is breathtakingly beautiful. Most people are friendly and helpful. Most of all, they live like we used to in the 70's and 80's. At a relaxed pace and generally safe and peaceful.

We have submitted our EOI some time ago, but need that job offer to be selected as neither of us are on the short list. So we decided to take the plunge!! The house is sold (at last), we are busy packing up and our plane tickets are booked, paid for and locked up for safekeeping!!!

Just a few more weeks and then we're there.

Eileen

Whew - that's quite a plunge!  Not sure where you're going, but if you're in this valley do let me know and we can get together.  Of course, if you're going to the North Shore you can just bugger off... ;D  Seriously, good luck.  Shout if there's something we can do to help from here.

No, Christchurch is not expensive, it's loads cheaper then Auckland O0 WE paying $100 less on rent a week for a much bigger house then we had in Auckland O0 Buying is also so much cheaper. Auckland prices start around $350 000 and here around $200 O0

As for the weather, well the winters are cold, but the summers can get nice and warm, high 20's. When we came down for hubby's interview(in april) it was gorgeous and for us NO HUMIDITY

It's also very much a country type town, 5 min in any direction out of the city and you're in the country. We actually live just north of the city, in a counttry town called Rangiora. O0

Ja, scary and exciting the same time. We'll have to see were the jobs take us. For now we are not going to be very fussy. Just need to get the hell away from here. Will get in touch with you via this site once there and knowing which direction we are going to take.

Hi all

We are Paul and Shirley, from Hillcrest and still suffering from jet lag! I just had to brag! We have no kids yet, and won't have until we are in NZ... we want them to be Kiwis from their first breath!
Paul is a bike mechanic by trade, but currently owns his own business manufacturing wooden furniture, I am a PA to a financial adviser in Kloof.
We have just returned from our LSD, and looks like it is all systems go! We loved the Hamilton area, Auckland was just too expensive, and there would be more work for Paul in the farm lands! Lake Taupo was stunning as well, butthen again the whole country is!

Brad how on earth do you cope with the stench there? I wanted to be sick!!

Brad, that sounds like Sasolburg.
Title: Re: Who are you ???

no, this is not Sasolburg. It is a beautiful town on the banks of Lake Rotorua, surrounded by green rolling hills and farmland with about 30 lakes and lots of forests to hike in. The smell is barely noticeable and most people who live here agree.
Title: Re: Who are you ???
Post by: Happy Expat on May 22, 2007, 04:25:18 am
We stayed there for a weekend and it wasn't that bad. We were told by a british friend that it smells so bad her kids wanted to throw up the whole time? So we were really worried, but it's nowhere near that bad and in some places you can't smell it all.
We kept teasing my daughter and saying that it was her farting :2funny:

What's the cause of the smell there ?
Title: Re: Who are you ???
Post by: brad77 on May 22, 2007, 09:22:27 am
Rotorua is the volcanic heartland of NZ with boiling mud pools, natural geysers, hot lakes and sulphur steam boiling up from under us, That is why Roto is famous, for the hot springs and volcanic stuff.  see some pics www.geyserland.co.nz of attractions nearby
Title: Re: Who are you ???
Post by: Shirls on May 22, 2007, 09:45:02 am
I must admit, when you first drive into Roto you smell it, but when we did the Luge it was fine. The view from up there is to stunning to put into words.
The only time the smell was very bad was down at the waters edge - by the Polynesian spa and near the one hot spring.

Thanks guys for your kind words of welcome and it is nice to know you like our little  website.

My husband is doing the real work - I don't know much about technical stuff :-)   My idea of it started off to encourage Afrikaans parents to keep Afrikaans as a home language.  It is quite sad to see Afrikaans parents talking Afrikaans to each other and only broken English to their children.  In the process children do not learn to communicate properly with their own parents.  Their is something to a "mother tongue".  However, it is not always easy for the children - as they are only schooled in English, some do feel more at ease to communicate in English and not to talk Afrikaans at all.  But so far so good - our daughter is very bilingual and I guess it was easy for her as she heard only Afrikaans from us and from most other people, she learned Kiwi.  She was only 14 months old when we came from South-Africa.  We are just creating a love for the language for her at the moment - and thankfully it is still working.

However, we try  not to talk Afrikaans if we are in Kiwi company - as the people here are not from a diverse language background with 11 official languages - they usually do not like to be excluded in a conversation that they can't  follow.  Any case, it is bad manners to talk in a different language that people do not understand.  So I might talk to our daughter in Afrikaans, but then tell the Kiwi friends what I said, or try to keep my voice down and not to be to loud, or I would speak English to my husband in Kiwi company (although that feels quite strange).

But everyone knows I am Afrikaans and that we raise our daughter bilingual.  And my Kiwi friends think it is great that we can speak 2 languages.

I have often heard it said that the kiwis are a bit indifferent to Afrikaans speaking people because of their tendency to speak Afrikaans to each other in the company of kiwis. They find this very rude and offensive. It is great that you guys have considered this and I am sure it has stood you in good stead with your new countrymen.

I don't mind if a new member joins and doesn't post, but they are doing themselves a huge disservice as they are missing out on the main aim of the forum - to make new friends to help the settling process when you arrive  :-\

Let's face it - this isn't a process you can survive without support from friends easily

Let me throw in my 2 cents worth here...

Not everyone is doing the whole emigration thing out in the open so perhaps they do not want to introduce themselves for fear of it getting into the wrong hands.

Well, thats our story anyway.  So until we have the stickers and we have resigned, we are known as tandl in public. And information leeks out as we post replies.

Hmm. Can see how that would look confusing.  Was typing in a hurry.  What I mean is people learn things about us from every post but we dont want to do a formal introduction until we have informed our bosses and family about our plans. Perhaps there are other users that feel the same.

Fully understand that, Tandl, but at least you're posting.  We're getting to know you even though we may not know your first names.  That's great.  You're building friends here along the way, and when we're in NZ, you can take the "mask" off, and we'll still be friends!  ;)

Aah ok it makes sense now.  It is up to you if you want to remain annon and it is understandable if you have not told anybody about your move.  Had a chuckle at the Boss thing.  If he is on here then he better be annon now hadn't he, otherwise he would have to hold seminars for all his employees who wants to leave too. ;D

LOL.  At the rate of people leaving I would not be surprised!  We already got the shock of our lives the other day when friends (who KNEW we were applying) told us they had resigned and were leaving in 2 months time! They had been applying for 4 years all in all and had not told a soul!!!

And all this time I was chatting to them about OUR experiences and they knew exactly what I was talking about and couldnt share it! I had a slight bone to pick with them when they eventually told us!  :tickedoff:

:)  I think it's harder for you guys on that end, what with the way things are, and it could so jeopardize your work situation if others knew.

Jan's colleagues were so sweet, they had a farewell coffee and cake for him yesterday.  Even though he hasn't officially resigned, they know it's "min dae" and some of them are going on Summer vacation, so they wanted to say goodbye officially while they were all still there.  he brought home the leftover cake YUMMYY!!!

Yeah and another 6 or 7 months could be very painful at work if they decide to give you any grief about the whole thing.  We already have to put up with certain friends (or aquaintances rather) giving us a hard time about the decision to leave.

I cant wait until we have those stickers!!  :heeha:

Tandl you have amazing self control.  If friends didn't tell us they were leaving and just sat there two faced and all, I would have  :knuppel2: :death: :hammer: :hang: them.

I can't understand how anybody will not tell you that they are leaving when you have told them that you are also leaving

Back to the anonymous thing - nobody needs to know who you are - you can use a nickname of your choosing on the forum and hide your email address so nobody will even know who is on the other side chatting away.

people having a lot to say about you leaving .. is just jealous, an selfish. In any case who are they to prescribe your life for you. I make my own decisions and evaluate them against criteria that is relavant to me and my lifestyle and living standards. If this is different from somebody els's let it be so. I am my own person and not an extention of somebody els.

Ha ha, well badprop, I initially thought he was pulling my leg.  Then I gave him hell....  :tickedoff: but I get it.  They were worried that if too many people got to know, someone would slip up.  They didnt tell anyone at all and I was one of the very first people they did tell.  I think they had a couple of sleepless nights about breaking the news to me!!!

Did I mention Im very forgiving???  O0

And as for those who have a lot to say about us leaving Johan, I dont care.  I also have some supportive friends who wont/cant go but are behind us all the way and I have a feeling they want to see how we do before they make the decision.

Hi there everyone.
My name is Mandy and for now that's all the names you'll get from me.  As seen in a previous thread on here I'm in a rather difficult postion that I'm unable to explain at this point.

We have not even submitted an EOI yet so nothing is moving at this stage.  An immigration agent that we have submitted out CV's to is in NZ at the moment.  Have an appointment with her for when she returns.  At this stage not sure if we will consider going immediately (as soon as that's possible) on work permits or if we'll take some more time to think this through.

Unfortunately for us we have a very complex situation on our hands before we can consider the move.  After the agent meeting I'll hopefully be able to divulge more of our story.

I'm partially related to Malcolm and Toni who left for NZ on the 20th June.  They're having a great down down there.  In a way I wish we were there too - but patience is the big name to this game!

Enjoy reading everyone else's experiences - learning lots through you guys.

Hi All

You probalby wondering where I have been or maybe not.  Charlie arrived in Auckland two weeks ago now and loving every minute of it, he is staying at a homestay for the time being, he is having his final interview on thursday with the big boys so we are holding thumbs he has had three interviews already so hopefully this is it.....

I am so busy this side, it really is not funny when hubby goes first and wifey is left to sell the car and house ect.  Although our house is sold we still waiting for the money as the strike has casued huge delays.  MJ you told me once that you did this when Jason went a few yaers ago and you had to sell up.... I now agree that I would not do it this way again.

My boys and I are missing him already, and the stress levels are high on my side.  What with packers, selling car, house, selling odd items, cleaning items that need to be packed as everything must be clean - what to take what not to etc.....

Feeling a bit sad at the moment , I jsut wish we could have gone over as a family....

Hi Sandy, hang in there, it will all be worth it in the end. I am in a similar situation and am sitting here in Wellington without my wife and daughter. Its hard, very hard but it gives me the time to get everything sorted so that as soon as my family arrives this side, there is no stress. By November I would have gotten the whole house organized etc, be settled in my new job etc. Its stressful at times, but believe me you guys are doing the right thing and its a small sacrifice you are making apart for a safe and happy life all together, this is the way I am seeing it anyway. As much as I wish my wife and daughter were here, I don't think I would have been able to settle into work as easy. Hang in there, the time will fly by.

thanks again.

Hi everyone
I was part of the forum over the last month or so and then something went wrong with my password.  Anyway, my previous posts seem to have disappeared too.  We are Pete and Jen.  We have daughter(12) and twins- boy and girl(10).  We were from Empangeni but moved to Cape Towna few years ago.  I think you might remember my questions about medical waivers.
A quick reminder, my twin girl is 'developmentally delayed'  and has a mild form of autism. Sandy, I think you are very brave .  Many of our friends have done it that way and altho' it is really tough and stressful, you will get through it.    :gl:
Because our case is complicated, we have chosen to go through a small agency. Our first appointment is on the 14th.  We have 135 points without jobs, but feel that in order to give us the best possible chance of getting over, Pete will have to secure a job.
We are hoping to go far North- Kerikeri or somewhere close.  Pete is a farmer, so wants to find something in agric.
Sandy, it looks as tho' I will need your pearls of wisdom if we do the same as you have done.!!

It can't be easy sitting in a strange country trying to make a start from scratch and not having your OH there.  It also can't be easy staying behind and doing the  final packing and selling on your own.  But you guys are doing it for each other, to make things better for your selfs and for your OH.  It takes guts to do this on your own and you need to pat your self on your back for having the courage to do this.  It takes guts and a very strong person to keep it together in these stressful times.   And keep in mind that this day to will come to an end.  So chin up and be proud of what you are accomplishing on your own.  Job well done to you Sandra and Worsie. Hi Sandy

I have been trying to convince my hubby to go without us and get a job/ settle etc... now that I read your mail I think perhaps it is just as well that he never wanted to and that we will now be going togther.

We are hoping the interviews coming up will help us get there by Dec....  I'm sure once I arrive on the other side with a suitcase, three irritated kids, a tired husband and no where to stay I will envy you though! ;)

It's tough now but one of the days you will all be together again. and SAFE!! Holding thumbs and let us know how it's going, Ok? :)

Hi again everyone
I'm Mandy (with the strange situation :-))  I can now say it's also Bruce and my son Kyle (18).
We have had our questions answered by an agent and plan to be in Auckland mid to late January 2008.  We are not doing the PR route as we don't qualify without jobs - we all know how hard that is to secure when not in NZ!!
So we're taking the plunge and going on visitors visas and finding jobs there.  Hoping it won't be too difficult.  I'm a bookkeeper and Bruce was once a while back with Telkom/TFMC.  Not sure yet what he'll be going into.
We have Bruce's brother in Howick, Auckland already - been there since June and doing well.

My son Kyle is doing matric so we've decided to wait for him to finish before going across.

Now the hard work starts - getting our papers into order.

Got lots of questions but will read more on "my move" first.

Hi
we are Adam, Jean, Amy (23) and Patrick (21), currently still in J'burg but have already bought a house in Nelson, sold our house here and the packers arrive late Sept! No job yet but I'm trusting that it too will fall into place at the right moment!

Jean and I decided to start a new adventure after I was "outsourced" ::), take advantage of my NZ citizenship - seemed a waste not to use it  :idiot2: - so it's the parents leaving home instead of the kids  ;)
My mum was a kiwi and arranged citizenship for all her kids many years ago. Looking at the numbers of people heading for Oz/NZ these days it is strange that I have sat on this asset for so long! Anyway, being outsourced and over 50 has provided the neccessary "get up and go" encouragement.
We've been doing it ourselves so far (with quite a lot of reference to this site), but am considering some help for the last financial arrangements.
Jean is the only one that needs to get a PR (tho' with hubby and both kids NZ citizens I can't see that should be a problem) we will try the "family stream work permit" route when we arrive in Oct'07 - should come thru within the three month visitors visa - and then go for the PR that takes so much longer!

Would be keen to hear from anyone who has emmigrated with their pets - how did they manage?

Lucky you with that citizenship and clever mom!! :)

Hi all not sure how I missed this. Been off for a while as I had a pc crash of epic proportions and it has taken a while to get everything back to where it should be. Anyway we are Syd  - a fitter and turner, Dalene -  accounting, Douglas 23 (a chef already resident in NZ for 2 years,) Craig 20 in IT - recently got a job as an on line A+ lecturer with a local college and Nikki 16. Ours has been a long journey but there is light at the end of the tunnel at last. Syd came back form NZ with a job offer on Thursday so now we can get all our things together for ITA submission. We have until end Sep so I am getting really antsy about it all. I hope to be there early in the new year to get Nikki into school. We are heading for Whangarei in the north.
