Free stuff in NZ
« on: May 01, 2007, 11:10:45 AM »
What is free in NZ ?  For instance I have read on another thread no bicycle license and some medical treatment is free?

So please add on to this list of free stuff
1) No bicycle license
2) Medical treatment
3) ?

I have read on another site that landlines are free?  I don't trust the info I get from other sites anymore :tickedoff:

What about dog licenses, tv license, schooling etc, etc.

I can't belief there is still stuff you get for free in this day and age, so what else can you get for free.....

3) Local calls are free, which means if you have a dail-up connection to the Internet, it is free.
4) Parking is free - no car guards  ;)
5) Home Security is FREE - no armed response required  ;)

In the last 4 months, instead of giving my "spare change" to car guards, I have now saved R600.

Enough to pay for a visit to my parents in Durbs.  ;)

You do still pay a flat fee for having a landline, but you don't pay per minute or even per call on the local calls.... take into consideration that local, means within your city.  So if you're phoning from Auckland to Wellington or Christchurch, you will be paying a long-distance fee per minute.  Phoning overseas, there are various different options.  One is paying a flat rate of $10 or $20 for a maximum amount of hours (think $10 cover 4 hours?).  But if you only speak for one hour, or even 5 minutes, it still costs that amount.  You can also choose which long distance service you're going to use (doesn't have to be the same company you use for your land line.

Un..be...lievable!!!  We worked out we are going to save +- 2500 rand per month on telephone, internet, doctors, domestic, and the car guards   Oh have to recalc, haven't added Chubb alarms on yet!!  That makes it over R3000 per month.  I feel like a kid in a candy bazaar...

How about schooling and all those wonderful licenses we all have to pay like TV and car and the license to have a license kinda thing.

- There is more, your security does not actually only cost you the monthly payment with chubb, no alarm system is perfect. Unless its just us?, but in the last year we have had to fork out at least R3000 on our alarm system because it was faulty.
- And I don't see anybody mentioning insurance. Our monthly insurance premium is R1100 per month.
- What about levies, if you are living in a complex in SA the levies normally come to more than R500pm. We living in a normal house and our rates/taxes cost about R500pm, not sure how this compares to NZ? Our rates in Cape Town are going up! Cape Town is currently in the process of re-evaluating everbody's rates/taxes according to new 2007 property valuations.
- Lots of people in SA have tracking systems installed on there cars, i think it costs about R200pm or something.

Our biggest savings are going to be on Medical Aid, insurance and security

Another one the electric gate... it keeps braking so another R300 per month.  Levy on my old townhouse was R640 pm...  and rates and taxes is R550 on the house.  All gone!

We are on a roll, what else is for free? :D

If I look at the cost of living in NZ and the average income per month, people should have a bit more cash lying around than we have in SA. but still I read that NZns don't save enough. So what do they do with their money.

Another thing I've noticed is that a lot of things are paid weekly, do you recieve pay weekly or monthly ??
