Business in NZ
« on: September 09, 2011, 12:55:08 PM »
Hi There

If I do move to NZ I will be buying a business and one of my options would be a Coffee shop . Anyone have one and are they popular ?
I am a Financial Advisor in SA but do not want to carry one in that field should I move .I would be considering moving to Wellington as my son wants to study Business Management and there is a Varsity there that has that course

I am looking for a total change in lifestyle .One without all the trappings that living in Gauteng brings with it .No more worring about the car you drive or where you live etc.

Any advice on good small businesses to look at ?

Thanks

Paul

Well, coffee here is VERY popular.  Did you know that there are more coffee shops per capita in Wellington than New York City?   :gl:

Coffee is huge in NZ.  There are coffee shops every where.  And you don't order a coffee - you have to order a long black, short white, mocha, cuppacino, slim latte.... I could go on forever with the list.  Always amusing watching a South African at a coffee shop for the first time :-)

:welcome: :welcome: Welcome to the forum, and good luck with the coffee business. Yes coffee is very popular here.
Talking about coffee...(not real coffee but instant!!!) I have found that the people I have met put milk into the mug before they add the hot water and it tastes insipid.    When I say that I like to put the water in before the milk, they think I'm nuts as they say it scalds the coffee. Still prefer my way, unless it is proper coffee.

Wellington will be a great place to open a coffee shop - just be aware that there are LOTS of them there.  So whatever you do, you need to be that extra bit special by a) making sure your coffee ROCKS and b) making sure the food you sell is top notch.  There are too many places here that have *** cakes, rock hard muffins and terrible soggy sandwiches and people very quickly end up avoiding these places.
I'd find a good, local supplier or even better yet, bake some things fresh on your premises.  Hiring a good chef and having good value, tasty menus offering seasonal ingredients seems to be a winner (at least with me and many people I know! :) )

Good luck!  When you do open that place, be sure to let us know and I'll be happy to come and check you out when you're in Wellington. :)

Cheers
Susan

Buying a business will mean you need to apply under a long term business visa
