Hi All

We decided to take our 2 year old cocker spaniel with us to NZ before we knew just how much it would cost. Of course I got a nasty shock when I found out

. We couldn't leave him behind anyway, so decided to bite the bullet and started the whole process.

I just received some awesome news this week from the Pet Travel company. As from May 2011, the policy on importing pets will change. Instead of the 120 day quarantine period (at about NZ$40/day, it is now only ..........10 DAYS!

. Apart from saving a bundle, that will be much easier on the dog.

Hope some others will be benefitting from these changes.

:clap:well if this is true what wonderful news - it has even got me to do a post - have not for months.
Costs aside when we were considering going I use to get up at night and look at our then 9 year old border collie and think no I cannot do that to her. We came close to not going.I had heard stroies that the period would be reduced in early 2008 and was on Mafs email list and every moring before we firmed up our travel arrangements praid for the period to be reduced. I was hoping for 60 days but prepared to settle for 90. 120 is doners long. Alas it was not to be --- now 10DAYS!!!!! But as some of you know we came back to SA after 3 months so she never set foot on NZ soil- it was a hell of a story getting her out because she had not been in the country out of quarantine. She gave back on special dispensation and official letters with red seals - like an ambassodor.
I recall on afternoon in Mission Bay when we nursed our glass of house wine at something like R60 a glass and sat next to a Brit who had his canine with him who he has collected at the airport that afternoon. This is the best news I have heard for a long time - it makes me a littel jealous.

has anyone verified this news namely that the quarantine is reduced to 10 days - had indirect contact with a propective emigrant who says there is no such news/facts on the MAF site??
Just wondering it would be unfair to get peoples hopes up.

Hi, I've called a company, called Pets Travel, here in Auckland and they know about the upcoming changes (from 120 to 10 days quarantine) but are still waiting on official confirmation. They're also talking about this change happening in May. Good news for us as we may be able to bring our Lab, Champagne, over :-)

I contacted MAF and they have sent me the proposed changes. They are looking at implementing mid - end April. This is the proposed timeline though so just hoping it does go through by then.

I have heard the same thing. So glad, as my two dogs are still in SA, flying out on 20th May to start their much shorter quarantine.

Now all I have to do is find a house to rent that allows dogs...

Unfortunately there has been another delay. Someone has asked for an independant audit as they are not happy with the new laws. So we are awaiting the director general to say whether or not an independant audit will be granted. If he says no everything goes ahead , if he says yes then the date as to when it will be implemented is indefinite if at all.
Apparently we should know by 16 May about which way he is going to go.

usually the Kiwis are so transparent and consultative that they would have asked everyone and his dog (lol)

Hi all!

I just want to ask if there has been any progress regarding this? We are planning our move for February and I will do six backwards cartwheels if the quarantine is reduced! Can anyone who recently took their pets over on the current process and an estimation of costs?

Yes, the new quarantine period is 10 days. There are things to be done before they leave but they don't have to go into kennels for that.
