My doggie is a foxterier/doberman
Very sensitive and can't stand cold.... But I want to take her with. :'(  I read somewhere that you can walk everyday your pet while it is in Quara? I am so afraid she doesn't make it with the cold. She will be there in July in Quara... I will be in NZ before her. She will stay by my mom till she can go to Karinga. I don't want her to stay forever by my mum because I don't know what will happen 5 years on with my mom. Maybe she must move to a smaller place where no dogs are alowed etc.

I wish I could explain to Kila that Quara is the price she must pay for immigrating, and that it is not forever. I will pray everyday for her and believe that she will survive.

Don't worry, I am sure the people in NZ are very caring and profesional.  The posts I've seen seem to be very positive about how pets are treated.  I am sure they will keep her nice and warm and well looked after. O0

Hi, Ensure that she has a blanket/coat that they can fit.
Does she wear one now in the winter.
Also once there get her a nice warm cushion of blanket for her basket/bed.
They do have heaters that they put on.
Exercising is limited - so do not expect to be able to walk with her etc.
Visit as often as possible.
Best of luck.

Hi Doreen, I'm sure your doggie will be fine. Just get in contact with the quarantine facility where you'll have her and explain to them about her cold sensitivity. I don't think you need to see quarantine as "a price to pay" for having her with you - from what I've seen and heard and read - the quarantine places are very nice and can be like a little holiday home for your dog. I've got so many good reviews back from ex-saffers that have had their pets go with them on the quarantine facilities -  I'm now getting worried if the doggies won't like the quarantine more than home! :)

I think any change of environment and change of familiar faces to an animal is a stressful time - so whether you leave them in SA with a foster family or you take them with and have them in quarantine for a while, it is not the "home" they were used to and the new scenarios might be stressful for them.

I understand the flights are probably the most worrying time and have discussed it with my vet (whom I have been with for ages and whose opinion I trust unquestioningly) - he reckons that all animals that they have helped relocate were absolutely fine after the flights and that they all did extremely well in the quarantine facilities in New Zealand. It all depends on your animal of course. We have two very energetic and inquisitive and "robust" little Jack Russels, so I have no doubt that they'll be more than fine through the whole "ordeal".

I'm chatting with a guy sometime next week that moved a whole caboodle of animals to NZ and who is happily living with them all now there for around 2 years.... so I'll post back on what he said his experiences were with the flying of the animals and the quarantine and the whole bang shoot.

Look forward to that Minette.  It is such a worry as to how they will cope.  Especially when you have one that is a bit crazy like mine!  He is also petrified of thunder storms.  A couple of weeks ago there was a mother of a storm in EL and he came running into the lounge and jumped onto hubbys lap!  All 48 kg's of him!! I think I have a pic of it on my son's phone, I will post it some time.

Hadenough, as you said- it all depends on the animals. Mine stress quickly. I wonder if they can't give them some medicine to relax on the flight? I believe she will be fine if I can visit her regularly in NZ.

Minette, I am also looking forward to that !!

I've done loads of reading and "giving medicine to relax" is most definitely a big NO-NO when animals fly. Reason for this is that because of the pressure difference and the altitude of the flight, the effects of any medication may be unpredictable and if the dog is sedated in any way whatsoever, it is difficult for the crew to determine if they are well or not. I don't know about herbal stuff like the ones you get from ECO - like ECO-FEAR, but very few airlines will, unless under direct and written supporting documentation from your registered vet, give any medicines to relax animals.

Sorry - I know we'd like them to sleep through the whole "ordeal", but that may just risk their lives and their future health very negatively.

I've ready somewhere else that good advice is to get your animals used to their travel boxes LONG BEFORE the flight - so get them as soon as you confirm everything and "play" around the travel boxes and in them with your animals often so that they can get used to the idea that the box is not a bad place to be.
