Hello and welcome!!

We've also only recently made the big decision to go to NZ from SA. I've got two Jack Russels and two domestic short haired cats and am definitely taking them with!! Costs and process involved is quite hectic (we're looking at about R100 000 for all four animals including vet costs, flights and 120 days mandatory quarantine in NZ). There are a couple of posts on this forum already regarding taking animals with you and what it entails, just search the forum topics and you'll see many different people's thoughts on the subject. If you're still unsure, just ask away, we'll be happy to help with the info we've already got!  :)

Thank you.  I have 2 boerboels (one weighing in at over 60 kg's! $$$$$) and an inherited maltese (mother in law moved into retirement centre).  My boerboels are 3 yrs old.  I know it will cost a fortune to get them there, but it is not negotiable.  My son (16) was mugged and stabbed last week, hence the drive to leave here.  The threads I looked at were a bit outdated (costs change so quickly), and I couldn't find anyone who had actually had dogs come through the quarantine period without too many problems.

Hi Hadenough,

Welcome onboard!  Extremely sorry to hear about your son's incident. :'(
Wish him a speedy recovery!

Pls tell us about yourselves in the HOWZIT thread.

Sorry I can't help with the querie re. taking dogs - we will be leaving ours with family staying behind, and quite frankly don't want to think about that at this stage!!! :'( :'(

But :gl: with the process...

I've just gotten some prices last week and it works something like this:
To have the pets (2 Jack Russels and 2 cats) quarantined in SA for 30 days prior to going over by Keringa - R22 000 (this is not mandatory, but some people suggest it is better as there are apparently a lot of tests etc that need to be done prior to their flight to NZ...must do some more research on this). The flight is around R16 000 for all my animals and then the quarantine in NZ for 120 days is the real purse breaker at around NZ$1,200 per animal (www.emigratenz.org).

Will post more info as and when I get it.

Hi All
Well that does it.  Leave the furniture behind, live on toast and tea when we get there and sleep on matresses on the floor!!  All money that would be spent on sending goods over will "go to the dogs!" ;D Still can't see myself leaving them behind.  The rand better improve before I leave though!!
Have a great day.

Welcome to the family Hadenough (still can't figure out where you got that name from though ;D )

Yep. the money really does go to the dogs if you want to take them with, but for some it just needs to be done

I agree the toast and tea is worth it to have the dogs.   :smitten:

Just a word of advice I read somewhere the other day that you are restricted to 2 dogs per property unles the property is above a certain size (5000m2 if I remember correctly)  I will try find the booklet and post the exact words. If you are bringing more than two you may have to rent a bigger property.

Wow, thanks for that! I think it is actually the same here (2 dogs), or was some years back, but people just ignore it. We won't get away with it over there!!

Thanks for the info MJ - any restriction on cats or the number of TOTAL animals on a property - I have two cats and two dogs that I want to take with.

ok finally found the article.  It is in the council section of the Cambridge Community Directory but I would think it would apply to other districts too.

" A restriction of two dogs being kept on any property under 1ha, and five dogs on any rural property over 1 ha, unless the owner has a permit to keep more."

Another book I picked up outside a pet shop is a free one by the spca, it has lots of interesting things in it.  It is also online www.petguide.co.nz
